Senior Backend Business Engineer

Chess.com is the #1 place on the internet to play chess and improve your game.  We have members in 195 countries and appear in 70+ languages.  We are looking for a Senior PHP/Symfony Engineer to join and help build our platform for our  70+ million members.  In this role you will use PHP and coding abilities through innovation and collaboration.

About You

You are a super skilled developer that pays attention to every detail about code. You like working with data and you are not afraid of having to deal with tables with millions of rows. You have experience working with payment processors and 3rd party integrations. You are humble with a sense of humor and don’t take yourself too seriously. 

What You’ll Do

  • Work on modifications and improvements to our payments platform.
  • Work on improving our admin reports.
  • Help your teammates with code reviews.
  • Work on improving our marketing tools so that we can understand better how our users interact with the website.
  • Build callbacks and APIs to support new features.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills working in a fully distributed team.
  • Good eye to spot bugs and suggest improvements in code reviews.
  • At least one year of experience working with a payment gateway integration (Stripe/Adyen/Paypal, etc).
  • 5+ years PHP experience (Symfony preferred).
  • Excellent understanding of software design and architectural patterns.
  • Experience with SQL schema design and query optimization.
  • Experience with across programming softwares such as MySQL, Git & GitHub, Doctrine, Redis, PHPUnit/PHPSpec, Resque, and Development VMs: Vagrant/VirtualBox
  • Sense of ownership and responsibility
