Chess Explanation Engineer

About Us

Chess.com is the #1 place on the internet to play chess and improve your game.  Chess software tells us what the best move is, but can it tell us why it's the best move?  Can it distinguish tactics from strategy?  Can it tell us why Black is better in a position, or why a move is a mistake?  We’re looking for skilled C++ developers to explore these questions and many more!

About You

You’re a creative software engineer with an interest in architecture.  You’ve built software for fun.  You’re a regular chessplayer.  When there’s a problem, you can think of more than one way to solve it.  You care about your code’s correctness, clarity and structure.  You’ve shipped bugs to production, found them and fixed them.

What You’ll Do

  • Work on software that millions of people use to learn and understand chess

  • Join a small team writing chess algorithms to recognize everything interesting about any move, piece, position or game

  • Plan, build, test, deploy, debug, refine, and enjoy

Preferred Skills

  • 3+ years professional C++

  • Comfort with git and github

  • Experience with the full software development life cycle

  • Javascript and python a plus

About the Opportunity

  • This is a full time or equivalent position

  • We are 100% remote (work from anywhere!)

  • Availability during US work hours strongly preferred
